Happy Birthday Roald Dahl!

Today is the world’s best storyteller’s ( and one of my favourite author’s)birthday!

I grew up reading Roald Dahl, from Matilda to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They have a special place in my heart. What I love about is books is the way he tells his stories. He makes the most ridiculous, disgusting things logical. And that’s what I adore in his books.

Happy Birthday and thank you for all the wonderful stories!

“So please, oh please, we beg, we pray
Go throw your TV set away
And in its place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall…”

Today is also Roald Dahl day, where we celebrate his work. How to celebrate?

  1. For us booknerds, I feel the best way is to re-read his books.
  2. Many of Dahl’s books have been made into movies, have a Roald Dahl movie night.
  3. Drop ‘gobblefunk’ convincingly into a conversation.
  4. Invent 10 swishwiffling new gobblefunk words and share them with your friends.

Other fun ways to celebrate can be found here.

Here are some amazing quotes from his books:

“A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”

“Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole hog. Make sure everything you do is so completely crazy it’s unbelievable…”

“A little nonsense now and then, is cherished by the wisest men.”

“It doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like, so long as somebody loves you.”

“You should never, never doubt something that no one is sure of.”

“Some people when they have taken too much and have been driven beyond the point of endurance, simply crumble and give up. There are others, though they are not many, who will for some reason always be unconquerable. You meet them in time of war and also in time of peace. They have an indomitable spirit and nothing, neither pain nor torture nor threat of death, will cause them to give up.”

“However small the chance might be of striking lucky, the chance is there. The chance had to be there.”
