T5W- Hold On, It Gets Better

Top 5 wednesday

Top Five Wednesday is a meme hosted by youtuber Lainey. Check out the Goodreads group here.

You all know that famous old saying right? Don’t judge a book by its movie… There is another lesser known one – Don’t judge a series by its first installment.

I’m sure all of us have a favourite series, which is amazing except for one tiny flaw – the first book is not that good. So, many abandon it which kind of breaks your heart. You may recommend it to your friends who may just don’t see what the big deal is.

But it is a big deal! Sometimes the characters, the world building and adventure develops only in subsequent books. Sometimes the best book is like fifth in the series! And all you want for them is to read the whole series so you can fangirl together.

So for this Top 5 Wednesday, I’ll be listing out 5 series I think you should not give up on,  even if you didn’t like the first installment.

I know most of these are quite popular but I find that people give up on hyped series easily if it doesn’t meet their expectations (which is usually very high). The thing is it takes more than one book for the magic to happen. Do check out Beth’s interesting discussion on managing expectations for hyped books over here.

1. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

The Books: Cinder, Scarlett, Cress, Winter, Fairest, Stars Above( I did not read this one)

My original rating for Cinder was 3 stars. I did like it, but it was not amazing. I wanted more motive for Levana being evil ( which did get fleshed out in Fairest) and I could see the “plot twist”  from a mile away.

But if I had stopped with Cinder, I would not have known the badass Scarlett or adorable Wolf. Nor the galaxy’s best hacker Cress or my one true love Carswell Thorne. Or Winter and Jacin.

It would have been awful. Seriously, it is such an amazing series!

2. Mara Dyer series by Michelle Hodkin

The Books: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, The Evolution of Mara Dyer, The Retribution of Mara Dyer

Again The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer was not my favourite mainly because of the insta love, a jackass love interest and other annoying clichés. But the paranormal ( slightly horror) element made me continue with the series.

I’m glad I did. The Retribution Of Mara Dyer is such an awesome book! ( One of my favourites). The Evolution… is great too, but Retribution makes you feel this awe and disgust ( honestly, these are my favourite kind of books).

3. The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa

The Books: The Iron King, The Iron Daughter, The Iron Queen, The Iron Knight ( There is a spin – off too ).

Again, there was insta love (kind of), the love interest is not a very nice person and there is a freaking love triangle! The Iron King also had a very slow start. The story progressed only after like 100-150 pages or so.

But the world of the Fey is so magical and captivating ! I loved the concept of the Iron Fey. The plot also gets more serious after the first book.

4. The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins

The Books: The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Mockingjay

I’m not saying The Hunger Games is not good. But it’s not amazing like Mockingjay. I noticed it when I re-read the series.

The stakes are higher, the plot gets sinister and there is more danger and horror as the series progress.

And it is so good! ( Even with all the heartbreak it brings).

5. An Unfortunate Fairytale series by Chanda Hahn

The Books: UnEnchanted, Fairest, Fable, Reign, Forever

Okay, so this is not a series I actually recommend.

I read these books when I was 14-15. I’ve always loved them but mostly because of nostalgia and how much I love the characters.

But, this is a series which got my sister reading.

So don’t go into it expecting mature writing or plot. Try it if you love fun fairytale retellings.

T5W-Least Favorite in My Favorite Series

Top ten tuesdaysTop Five Wednesday is a meme hosted by youtuber Lainey. Check out the Goodreads group here.

So this week for T5W, I have to choose my least favourite book in my favourite series.

But…its so hard! And how can I choose just five?

Anyway, here are my top 5 picks. I have not included Harry Potter because I CANNOT pick a least favourite.

The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #2) The Iron King (The Iron Fey, #1) Fairest (An Unfortunate Fairy Tale, #2)                                                   Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles, #2) Cracked (Soul Eaters, #1)

1)Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan

Least Favourite: Sea of Monsters

Now, I don’t hate this one but out of the five, I think I like this the least. When Percy was not allowed to go on the quest and all that, it made me think of Order Of the Phoenix and Umbridge. I didn’t really like that. I don’t know…

2) The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa

Least Favourite: The Iron KIng

I love this series! But in The Iron KIng ( the first book in the series), nothing exciting ( compared to the other books) happens for atleast a 100 pages or so. I noticed this when I read this to my sister.

3) An Unfortunate Fairytale Series

Least Favourite: Fairest( the second book)

This is not the worst in the series. I just like it the least because of what Mina had to endure. It was so unfortunate.

4) The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

Least Favourite : Scarlett

I felt this book was a bit slow. I also didn’t buy Scarlett and Wolf’s ‘love’. I know its cute and sweet but it was too fast.

5) Soul Eater Series by Eliza Crewe

Least Favourite: Cracked

For me, Cracked was a bit tame compared to the other books. I mean it was pretty amazing but the rest in the series are better.

So that’s the end of this T5W. Which is your least favourite in your favourite series?

T5W: Fictional Items I Desperately Need

Top ten tuesdays

Top Five Wednesday is a meme hosted by youtuber Lainey. Check out the Goodreads group here.

This is my first T5W post and I’m so excited.

So um… hello!!*waves hand*

This week’s topic is top 5 fictional items I really, desperately need. It was very difficult to narrow down these items to just 5. So hard. Its would be so very cool if I had these!I mean theae are the items I’d probably (probably) sell my soul for.

So without further ado, here are the items……

1)The Time Turner

You know the day before the exam? Its 12 at night and you’ve got 20 more chapters to study? When you are this close to a nervous breakdown and you desperately wish you had 12 more hours? Well, a time turner would be of great help at that time!

Imagine you made a bad decision. You can go back in time and warn your younger self! So perfect!

That’s why I need a time turner! And also because it looks really cool.

2) The Sword Of Gryffindor

I don’t know, but I’ve always had a thing for swords.

3) Helm Of Darkness(Percy Jackson)

“According to Grover Underwood, the Helm allows Hades to melt into shadows and pass through walls. While wearing it he cannot be touched, seen, or heard, and he can radiate fear so intense that it can easily drive a person insane or stop their heart. Grover also says that this is why all rational creatures fear the dark.”-riordon.wikia

The above paragraph states quite well why I NEED it.

4) The Rampion( The Lunar Chronicles)

The super cool Rampion spaceship schematics!:

I’ve always wanted a spaceship. Also because I Love the Lunar Chronicles.

5) Wishbone(Daughter of Smoke And Bone)

So that’s all folks!

Which are the fictional items you need?( or leave a link to your post below).

Happy Reading!
